SGEU Bargaining Update

July 22, 2026

Following the last SAHO/Health Provider Union (HPU) collective bargaining session, separate meetings were scheduled with CUPE, SGEU, and SEIU-West to independently respond to the individual packages SAHO tabled with each HPU on Friday July 10, 2026. SAHO’s packages intend to effectively move negotiations to conclusion by narrowing its remaining proposals to support the Employers’ key priorities.  SAHO/SGEU met on July 20 and 21, SAHO/SEIU-West is scheduled for July 23 and 24, and CUPE is scheduled for July 27 and 28.  

SAHO/SGEU July 20-21

SGEU took the necessary time on July 20 to complete its review before tabling responses to the entirety of SAHO’s package on the afternoon of July 21. 

SAHO recognizes and appreciates the time and effort that SGEU put into providing this comprehensive response. SAHO is reviewing this and will provide a complete response at the next bargaining session with SGEU set for August 6 and 7, 2026.

Both SAHO’s and SGEU’s packages focus on the outstanding priorities of the parties. For the employer this includes the movement of employees and work, portability of benefits and seniority, contracting in, and monetary proposals. Addressing these priorities will ensure a competitive, stable workforce and enable more efficient patient centered care across the province.

The example below demonstrates how HPU territorial boundaries negatively impact patient care and unnecessarily restricts the ability of the employer to address workload issues. SAHO’s proposals support reducing these barriers to ensure effective and timely patient care, enhanced opportunities for recruitment, retention, and career development of employees, as well as reducing reliance on temporary third-party staff.

Melfort to Kinistino = 30.4 km     

In this example, the SHA has Physicians and Nurse Practitioners operating Primary Health Care clinics in Melfort (SGEU) and Kinistino (CUPE).  The SHA also has a Medical Office Assistant located in Melfort and would like to utilize them to support the Primary Health Care clinics in Kinistino to provide additional administrative support when required (e.g. due to an unplanned staffing shortage). Unfortunately, the current wording of the HPUs respective collective agreements prevents the SHA from doing this as the Medical Office Assistant is physically located in a different union territory (SGEU) than the Primary Health Care clinic (CUPE).

 This round of bargaining continues to provide an opportunity to review and modernize collective agreements to better reflect the realities of Saskatchewan’s healthcare environment. 

Discussions have included initiatives focused on strengthening healthcare delivery across Saskatchewan by maximizing employment opportunities and enhancing timely access to patient care.
